Africa produces mostly black tea with the exception of Rooibos and Honey Bush teas which have no botanical relation to Camellia Sinesis the tea plant . Kenya , the largest producer of tea in Africa , in 1997 became the # 1 exporter, surpassing India and Sri Lanka . Due to the tropical climate tea is picked every 17 days , year around . There are two rain seasons , April - May and October - November . March is the driest month and July the coldest .
Malawi and Zimbabwe with warm rich soil and high altitude also produce superb tea. 
India is still the largest producer but most of the tea is consumed by it's people .
